Each summer, we recruit many summer camp volunteers for our Summer Fun! and ArtReach art camp programs. This is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience working with children in a fun and energetic setting.

Submit the online Volunteer Application Form. Please check off that you are interested in children’s arts camps.

To apply for the Summer Fun! Student Support Volunteer, please name this position in the other program(s) field.

  • Submit the 2019 Summer Art Camp Volunteer Schedule Request Form to let us know your availability.
  • Attend an interview. We will contact you to arrange an interview after we receive your application.
  • Complete reference and, if necessary, criminal record checks. (Applicants who are age 19+ will need to complete a police information check.)
  • Attend a mandatory orientation and training session.

Place des Arts’ volunteer dress code is casual – dress for mess and movement. Summer volunteers must wear their Place des Arts t-shirt on Mondays and Fridays. Comfortable footwear.

Roles & Responsibilities

Summer Fun Art Camp Volunteers

Our Summer Fun! program runs for six weeks in 2019 from July 2 – August 9 and offers a variety of music, dance, drama and visual arts classes for students ages 5 to 14.

We require a minimum commitment of two weeks (Monday-Friday). Full- or half-day shifts are available. A Mandatory orientation session takes place on Tuesday, June 25 from 4:30 – 6:30 pm.

ArtReach Camp Volunteers

Our ArtReach program runs for one week from August 12 – 16 in 2019. It is a free camp for children in Coquitlam who face financial barriers to arts education.

We require volunteers to commit to all five days of the camp from August 12 – 16. Full- or half-day shifts are available. A Mandatory orientation session takes place on Thursday, August 8 from 5:00 – 6:30 pm.

Summer Fun and ArtReach volunteers work closely with staff and teachers to ensure the overall safety and participation of students in the camp.

Specific duties may include:

  • welcoming students each day;
  • ensuring students sign in and sign out each day;
  • escorting students to and from their classes;
  • assisting students in their classes;
  • working individually with students who need extra support;
  • supervising students during breaks and after-camp care;
  • helping prepare students for Friday Fun Day;
  • helping prepare name tags and signage.
  • ArtReach volunteers also assist with preparing and serving meals and snacks to students.

Summer Fun! Student Support Volunteer – Specialized Position

We are seeking several responsible, caring and committed volunteers (16 or older) with experience working with children for a Summer Fun! Student Support position. The Student Support Volunteer will assist Place des Arts’ staff and teachers by providing extra support to specific students ages 5-12 to maximize students’ success in our Summer Fun! Camp. Please continue reading below for details about this specialized volunteer role.

Key Responsibilities: Place des Arts is seeking responsible, caring and committed volunteers (16 or older) with experience working with children to assist with child supervision during our Summer Fun! children’s arts camp.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Provide one-on-one support to students with special needs and/or behavior challenges;
  • Supervise such students during breaks, lunchtime, outside play and in the classroom, as needed;
  • Reinforce Place des Arts “FISH” policy behavior values: Follow Instructions, Include Everyone, Show Respect and Help each other;
  • Assist with other camp duties, such as taking attendance and escorting students from class to class, as needed.

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator and Summer Fun Lead Programmer.

Length of Appointment: July 2 – August 9, 2019

Time Commitment: Volunteers must be available during the six weeks of the Summer Fun! Camp (July 2 – Aug 9, 2019). Shifts will be scheduled Monday-Friday, between 8:30am-4:00pm, depending on the volunteer’s availability. Breaks will be provided.

Qualifications:

  • Must have experience working with children 5-12 years old, (for example: babysitting, daycare, volunteering with elementary schools, day camps and other children’s programs);
  • Patient, caring, friendly, dependable, committed, responsible and adaptable.
  • Ability to relate to children;
  • Effective verbal communication skills;
  • Must be able to work in a team environment and follow instructions well;
  • Suitable for volunteers who are 16 years old and older;
  • Studying in a field related to childcare and education an asset. For example: Special Education Assistant (SEA) or Teacher Assistant, Early Childhood Education (ECE), Education or PDP, etc.
