Registration FAQs

Public registration for September-June music, dance and theatre arts classes opens to new students in June. Public registration for fall, winter and spring session classes begins in June and continues throughout the year. Students may register for all three sessions or each session individually.

Please note: returning students are given the opportunity to re-register for the following season prior to the public registration opening, so some of our programs may be full by the public registration opening date.

Place des Arts cannot refund this processing fee for withdrawals or cancellations since it is not refunded to Place des Arts by ActiveNet.

Why do I have to pay registration fees each time I register?
As Place des Arts is a not-for-profit charitable organization, we must charge registration fees to help offset administrative costs associated with registering customers, enrolling students, payment processing and transaction fees associated with the registration software, managing customer accounts and maintaining studios and equipment (e.g. sound systems, pianos, kilns, studio tables and chairs).

When can I register for classes?
Registration for fall, winter and spring session classes is on a first-come, first-served basis. You can register for fall, winter and spring session classes beginning in June and at any time thereafter. Help us ensure that programs run by registering early.

Registration for September – June private lessons and group classes must be done in person or by phone. Registration for continuing clients for the following September takes place in late May and early June. Registration dates will be emailed to current clients. Registration for new September – June students begins in June for the following September. Providing there is space, private music lessons can be arranged at any time through the reception desk.

Can I withdraw or transfer from a class?
Please review our registration policies to find out more about important dates, withdrawals and cancellations.

Can I register for a class that has already started?
Late registration is accepted at the discretion of the teacher and where space is available. Please inquire at the registration desk.

Why is Place des Arts so strict on ages for classes?
Our classes are programmed based on the developmental abilities of each age group. By adhering to set age groups, we ensure a quality experience for all students in the class.

Why is Place des Arts strict on class maximums?
In keeping our class maximums small, we can ensure a high quality of learning and provide students with individualized teacher attention.

Are classes ever cancelled?
Place des Arts reserves the right to cancel a class due to low enrolment. Place des Arts will notify students/parents at least 48 hours prior to the start of a class. We will attempt to reschedule each student for another class at a convenient time. If this is not possible a refund will be granted. Supplies for classes should not be purchased by the student until a few days before the class start date to avoid unnecessary expenditures if the class is cancelled. Please note: online processing fees are non-refundable. Help us ensure that programs run by registering early.

What’s the difference between September – June and fall, winter and spring session classes?
Fall, winter and spring session classes are 4 to 12 weeks of classes during the fall, winter and spring. September – June classes follow the school year and run throughout that period.

Which type of class should I register in (September – June or fall, winter, spring session classes)?
Most visual arts and literary arts classes run during the fall, winter or spring sessions. Generally, these progress over the three sessions, allowing students to build upon the skills they learn. Students may register for classes in any or all sessions.

In music, dance and theatre arts, fall, winter and spring session classes generally introduce students to the discipline and prepare them for entry into the ongoing September – June programs. Ask our registration staff to help you decide which class is right for you or your child. If you have more specific questions, please contact the appropriate program coordinator.

How do I register for off-site classes that take place at Evergreen Cultural Centre?
If the class appears in the Place des Arts Annual Program Guide, registration must be done through Place des Arts. Fall, winter and spring session class registration may be done by phone at (604) 664-1636, online or in-person at Place des Arts. Registration for all ongoing classes, including those that take place at the Evergreen Cultural Centre, must be done in person at Place des Arts.

Music Lessons & Classes FAQs

Can I try out an instrument or teacher before signing up for private music lessons?
Our teachers offer a range of different teaching styles as well as instruments to study. Many of our teachers offer trial lessons and/or would be happy to speak with you in advance of your first lesson to help you decide which instrument is right for you.

What if I miss a music lesson?
No refunds or make-ups will be granted for class(es)/lesson(s) missed by the student for reasons including, but not limited to, illness, scheduling conflicts, vacation and/or technical difficulties experienced during an online class or lesson.

What if the teacher cancels a music lesson?
When a teacher misses a lesson, they will either offer an alternate time for a makeup lesson or Place des Arts will issue a credit for the missed lesson.

Will my child participate in music festivals/exams?
Many of our teachers encourage their students to enter exams and festivals but not all. If you would like to study with a teacher who has insight into these activities, the registration desk keeps information on which teachers participate in festivals and exams. It is also important to discuss your expectations with your teacher during your first lesson.

Dance Classes FAQs

How do I know which level of dance class is appropriate for my child?
When registering, please let us know of any dance experience your child has had and we will do our best to register your child in the best-fit level. Your teacher will also assess your child during the first one to two classes and determine if the class is the right fit for your child.

What are dance festivals?
Dance festivals or competitions are annual adjudicated competitions held throughout the Lower Mainland that take place from March to May.

Will my child’s class be participating in dance festivals this year?
Most ongoing classes participate in dance festivals; however, participation is based on the teacher’s discretion once classes start in the fall. Sessional dance classes do not participate in dance festivals.

Will my or my child’s class be performing in Place des Arts’ year-end dance recital?
Many of Place des Arts’ dance classes perform in the year-end dance recital; your dance teacher will confirm whether the class will perform. Sessional dance classes do not participate in the year-end dance recital.
