The holiday season is upon us here at Place des Arts with November and December holding many opportunities to get involved! There are plenty of fun activities lined up for those of you who love working with kids, including Lights at Lafarge and our annual holiday event, Reflections. The upcoming opportunities are listed below.

Christmas Boutique Drop-Off | Sunday, November 3

Assist with the preparation of our Christmas Boutique! This is a great opportunity to support local artists and become involved in the arts community. Volunteers need to be able to lift items and handle delicate materials.

  • Shift: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm (3 hrs) – Job: Boutique Drop-Off/Inventory Assistant (5) – Help with checking the incoming stock against the inventory lists to make sure that items are accounted for, checking the labels/tags correspond with the inventory list and a retail price, assist artisans with drop-off, helping with moving checked items into storage.

Christmas Boutique Set-up | Monday, November 11

Explore your design skills by getting involved in the set-up of our Christmas Boutique! This shift takes place on the Remembrance Day holiday.

  • Shift: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm (5 hrs) – Job: Boutique Set-Up/Inventory Assistant (2) – Some lifting involved, being careful with delicate items. Volunteers will be on their feet for about 5 hours.

Exhibition Opening | Friday, November 15

We need people who enjoy preparing food and assisting with events to help with the Festive Opening Reception for Positively Petite, the Christmas Boutique and November Exhibitions. This is a great opportunity to support local artists and become involved in the arts community.

  • Shift: 6:00 – 9:30 pm (3.5 hrs) – Job: Food Prep & Event Support (3) – Help with event set up and take down. Cut food and prepare food trays for guests, refill napkins, collect used plates/glasses and tidy throughout the night, wash and dry dishes, load dishwasher. Assist with event support as needed. Must have some experience in the kitchen (i.e. safely using a knife; loading a dishwasher). 

Lights at Lafarge | Saturday, November 30

The City of Coquitlam’s Lights at Lafarge event is a highlight of the festive season, attracting eager crowds from all over the Lower Mainland. The lights are switched on during an evening of free, family-friendly entertainment. Place des Arts will be hosting a lantern making activity booth at the event, and we need your help.

Location: Lafarge Lake (1205 Pinetree Way, Coquitlam)

  • Shift: 5:30 – 9:00 pm (3.5 hrs) – Job: Art Activity Assistants (4) – Volunteers help with Place des Arts’ art activity booth at the event. Duties include: helping to set up and clean up the booth and lantern making activity, demonstrate and guide children through a fun and easy drop-in lantern making activity.

pARTy@ PdA – Festive Felting | Friday, December 6

Guests will learn basic techniques of wet felting from teacher and artist Catherine Dumaine. Volunteers are needed to help with food prep, general event support.

  • Shift: 6:00 – 9:30 pm (3 hrs) – Job: Food Prep & Event Support (3) – Help with event set up and take down. Cut food and prepare food trays for guests; refill napkins; collect used plates/glasses and tidy throughout the night; wash and dry dishes; load dishwasher. Greet and direct guests. Assist with event support as needed. Must have some experience in the kitchen (ie safely using a knife; loading a dishwasher).

Reflections: Lantern Making & Tea Salon | Sunday, December 8

Reflections is Place des Arts’ free, all-ages celebration of diversity and multicultural winter traditions in our community. This event was previously named “A Lantern Affair.” Volunteers are needed to assist with the tea salon and lantern making workshops inspired by those from the various cultural groups that populate Coquitlam.

  • Shift: 10:00 – 2:00 pm (4 hrs) – Job: Lantern Activity Assistants (1) -Duties include helping to set up the event and art activities, demonstrate and guide children through fun and easy drop-in lantern making activities.
  • Shift: 12:30 – 6:00 pm (5.5 hrs) – Job: Lantern Activity Assistants (12) -Duties include helping to set up and clean up the event and art activities, demonstrate and guide children though fun and easy drop-in lantern making activities.
  • Shift: 12:30 – 6:00 pm (5.5 hrs) – Job: Tea Salon Assistants (3) – Assist with event set up, making and serving tea in the tea salon and event clean up.

Christmas Boutique Take-Down | Sunday, December 22

  • Shift: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (6 hrs) – Job: Boutique Pick-Up/Inventory Assistant (6) – Must be organized and detail-oriented. Volunteers will help to carefully sort, pack, carry and keep track of inventory as artisans pick up their goods.
