Visual Arts classes

Animation: Hand-Drawn (7 – 8 years)

Explore animation from its most basic principles to its unique capabilities as a storytelling medium. Then use the techniques learned to create a short animation. Finished projects will be assembled and then emailed to families approximately three weeks after the class end date.

Meet Teacher, Riley O’Neill

I am a filmmaker, animator and visual artist currently residing in Coquitlam. I have a bachelor’s degree in filmmaking from Simon Fraser University and am currently working on two film projects funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and the National Film Board of Canada. With each class, I endeavour to create opportunities for each student to incorporate their unique ideas into the project at hand.

 

 

 Mixed Media (5 – 12 years)

Explore various art forms, from painting and drawing to collage and sculpture. This class encourages self-expression, imagination and skill development. Each session features fun, age-appropriate projects to ignite a passion for art.

Meet Teacher, Matin Komeili

My journey with art began in my early childhood, igniting a lifelong passion for creativity. I immersed myself in painting and drawing, nurturing my skills and eventually pursuing a Fine Arts degree in my home country. Throughout my academic journey, I explored various mediums, from watercolours to oil painting and charcoal. After college, I ventured into teaching art classes to students of diverse ages. My teaching philosophy centres around nurturing every student’s creativity and enabling them to articulate their thoughts and emotions through art.

 The Art of Portraits – Intermediate (11 – 14 years)

For students who have taken Drawing & Painting for a minimum of two sessions. Learn how to apply the principles of drawing and painting to create unique portraits. Have fun exploring a wide variety of techniques, styles and mediums, including graphite, soft and oil pastels, watercolours and mixed media.

Meet Teacher, Clarissa Banos

Clarissa Banos is a visual artist whose subject matter focuses on traditional Latin American culture and folklore. She holds a BFA in Graphic Design from Universidad Dr. Jose Matias Delgado, El Salvador, and an MFA in Graphic Design and Illustration from the University of Illinois, Chicago, where she graduated as a Fulbright LASPAU Scholarship grantee. Clarissa’s artwork has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in various cities globally including Vancouver, Chicago, New York, Milan, Canary Islands and Barcelona. She has been a visual arts instructor at Place des Arts since 2019.

Sewing & Embroidery (8 – 17 years)

Learn expressive and textural embroidery techniques to transform clothing. Turn mending into a fashion statement by reviving pre-loved clothing such as hoodies, sweaters or jackets into a piece of wearable art. Incorporate beads, rhinestones, patchwork and trims into your stitchwork and learn floral designs and new stitches. This class focuses primarily on hand sewing and decorative embroidery but there will also be an opportunity to review the basics and use a sewing machine to create your fashion design vision. A selection of thrift clothing will be provided but we encourage students to bring in clothing that needs repair.

 Textiles & Tie Dye (8 – 17 years)

Transform second-hand clothing and fabric while learning printing and dying techniques. Learn tie-dying and basic shibori dying to create beautiful base colours and textures. Then paint fabrics, design/cut stencils and use a silk screen to print unique art on top of dyed garments or textiles. Transform the look of fabrics to give items new life, cover stains and create beautiful garments. Second-hand items will be provided but we encourage students to bring in white clothing, pillowcases and any other base non-synthetic fabrics to dye and print. Teacher: Cyd Eva

Upcycle Denim (8 – 17 years)

Express yourself and make fierce fashion statements by upcycling denim! Paint beautiful designs using heat set fabric mediums, create a piece of artwork to be printed into textile heat transfer paper and add patchwork with textile scraps. Learn distressing, mending, the basics of embroidery and hand stitching to add as a final touch to denim masterpieces. One piece of denim clothing will be provided to each student but we encourage students to bring in at least one other item that is made of denim, leather, khaki or canvas fabric to customize. Meet Teacher, Cyd Eva

I am an emerging interdisciplinary visual artist and fashion designer from Coquitlam, BC. I love patterns and colours and create art in a variety of mediums including painting, murals, clothing design, upcycling vintage, collage, textile sculpture, dance, film and photography through the brand I run called Pattern Nation. I have a BFA in visual art from Simon Fraser University (2016) and a degree in fashion design from Cape Town College of Fashion Design (2021). I believe in encouraging creative expression and individuality in my students.   strive to create a welcoming, inclusive, fun and supportive environment for all my students while sharing with them tools with which to realize results and open doors in their imaginations.
