Fifty-plus years ago members of the Coquitlam Fine Arts Council (CFAC) had a dream, an idea for an arts centre, a welcoming place where many arts disciplines would be taught by skilled teachers. A place where the work of emerging artists and local artisans could be displayed and sold, and where events and festivals could be held, drawing people together to celebrate the arts.

The dream became a reality when Place des Arts opened its doors to the community on December 1, 1972. Fifty years later, we are still here and proud to continue to uphold the original vision. Reaching this milestone demonstrates the strength of that vision established half a century ago.

Our 50th season is all about celebrating Place des Arts voices through creative connection, storytelling and joy!

We have a number of special initiatives to celebrate this year and we want you to join us!

Place des Arts is starting off with a bang on September 24 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm with the 50th season Kick-Off event. The event will include a giveaway, cupcakes (while supplies last) and the launch of an interactive community art project, Weaving Stories Together. The project, facilitated by Place des Arts teacher and fabric artist Mariana Frochtengarten, will bring people together through a fibre arts activity created by all who attend and participate. The artist will be onsite throughout the season to facilitate this free, fun art project suitable for all ages and abilities.

September also includes the launch of the first in a series of 50/50 raffles we are holding this season. Our goal is to raise funds to support subsidies, bursaries and no-cost community events and programs. Help us remove financial barriers to the arts by purchasing tickets. Winner takes half! Find out More

In November, we will present our 50th Anniversary Gala. Come celebrate the arts with us through an exciting and interactive evening filled with creative connection, storytelling and joy! The evening will begin with a reception at Evergreen Cultural Centre with food and beverages followed by a performance that blends narration, music, dance, theatre and visual arts to tell the story of Place des Arts. All ages are welcome. Free admission; pre-registration is required as seating is limited. Reserve your tickets.

June will feature a special 50th Anniversary Community Exhibition showcasing artwork that reflects our 50th season mission. We invite former and current teachers, students, staff and volunteers to submit artwork that reflects their artistic journey and connection to Place des Arts. For exhibition guidelines and the application form, check our Call for Artists page in mid-September.

Throughout the season, we will be celebrating the many incredible people who have helped shape Place des Arts through our social media campaign Creative Connections. We will share photos, videos and submitted stories from the past 50 years.

Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to not miss this series!

Thank you to everyone – board members, staff, teachers, artists, volunteers, sponsors, partners, the City of Coquitlam and of course our wonderful patrons – who’ve made and will continue to make Place des Arts a vibrant and inspiring place.
