Biography
Sonya received her diploma in advertising in 1991. As an award-winning graphic designer, the spirited artist within needed to break free. She started to pursue mixed-media painting and has never looked back. Through trial and error, Sonya has developed unique techniques such as large embossed acrylic skins, mixed media paintings on her own hand-rusted steel sheets and paintings on engraved plaster. She continuously explores and experiments with new combinations of materials and methods to present her creative vision in a distinctive and contemporary way. This adventuring also informs her art lessons and ensures that her teaching is always unique and fresh.
Artist Statement
My newest series, “You Are My Home”, is about connections: connection to family, friends, nature, my world, my country and its history and my ancestors and their stories.
It speaks of the people who walked before us; the spirits of the departed and the memories and legacies they left us.
It tells of the colonization and development of indigenous land, the land we now call home as well.
