Artist Statement

Food carries memory and belonging. It’s nostalgia for childhood and the comfort of meals shared with friends who became family, and in my case, the small joys of settling into a new city. I explore these ideas in a series I call “Small Bites”. The work is set in acrylics, building weight and texture, so the surface feels alive, then layered with oils to add depth and mood. Each piece holding both energy and atmosphere, a taste of memory in colour and form.

Biography

I’m Shweta Parmar, a PhD in Microbiology by training, but a maker through and through. Since childhood, I’ve shifted from pencil sketches and ink drawings to delicate quilling and textured paintings. Five years ago, I moved to Canada, and painting became a way to revisit cherished memories while also capturing the new rhythms of life here. What draws me in isn’t precision but presence, the moment when layers build, colours collide, and the piece starts to feel alive on its own. Art has been the constant thread running alongside the science in my life: one built on experimentation and control, the other on openness and letting things unfold naturally.
