Capturing the intricate textures of my muses is paramount for my artwork; I want the viewer to feel as though they could touch each feather and petal etched into my pieces. For me, art is a means of studying and appreciating the world around me. It allows me to analyze and better understand the subjects I portray and helps me see them in a new light. Sitting down and meticulously drawing each detail of my reference lets me become incredibly familiar with what I am depicting and allows me to feel more connected to my subject. Graphite, ink, china marker and scratchboard are materials I frequently employ to create my work because of their simplicity. These mediums allow me to draw deliberate, sharp lines that I can use to build up my works with an elevated level of detail; they also lack the distraction and energy of colour, allowing the audience to focus solely on the forms and textures of the piece. My process largely consists of hatching and stippling to build up values. Each piece is comprised of many light layers of lines that build up over time, creating a delicate depth in my work.
