Artist Statement

For my first foray into miniature work, my themes were ‘the number 3’ and ‘the rule of thirds’. In my ‘3, 2, 1’ series of gourds and mushrooms, I turned 3 pieces: 3″, 2″ and 1″ tall with every piece scaled in proportion to the others. ‘The Trini-tea’ is a playfully small set of teacups and trays, inspired by the cylindrical form of ‘yunomi’ (湯のみ), Japanese teacups typically made from ceramics.

Biography

My name is Matt Lo, and I love making things. Based in beautiful Richmond, BC, I turn sustainably sourced local wood into a wide variety of items that are both beautiful and useful.

Woodturning has a special place in my life, as both a connection to the earth and my friends and loved ones. Every piece is made with skills and techniques passed from one woodturner to the next. To turn is to share, and I would love to share the joy of our craft with everyone.
