Artist Statement
I’m inspired by the creative process itself and have a strong preference for fluid art and abstract expressionism. I’m fascinated with organic structures, varied patterns, and dynamic movements inherent in nature. The vivid colours I use bring energy and liveliness to my work. My compositions, with their free-flowing nature and circular forms, evoke natural phenomena like swirling water or galaxy-like formations. This allows for intriguing interpretations, from the ethereal and spiritual to the visceral and sensory. I invite viewers to reflect on the beauty and fluidity of the natural world and find deeper meaning in my works.
The pieces on display in this exhibition include a series of alcohol ink paintings from my “Jubilance” collection created over the past year. These pieces express happiness, triumph, and excitement, representing my playful spirit. They are 5” x 5” in size on Yupo paper mounted onto cradled wooden panels, and covered with a gorgeous epoxy resin finish that looks like glass. The artworks are characterized by vibrant, fluid forms and splashes of colour. Dominated by rich shades of blue, pink, and purple, the pieces feature organic shapes that blend and overlap, creating a dynamic effect. Metallic gold accents add depth and texture. The overall aesthetic is lively and energetic, evoking feelings of exhilaration and vitality. My hope is that viewers will connect emotionally and find the vivid colours energizing and uplifting.
Biography
Marika Morissette is a visual artist from Burnaby specializing in acrylic pour paintings. Marika’s creativity blossomed as a young child with oil painting classes, singing in choir, playing the piano and acting in school plays. Although her love of the arts was evident, her career took her in a different direction. She earned a B.A. degree in Communication Studies with honours from Concordia University. A successful 20-plus-year career as an executive assistant followed. In 2021, she departed the corporate world to follow her creative direction, spend more time with family and pursue her passion for painting.
Having always painted on occasion, Marika discovered the wonders of fluid art in 2019. She loves this exciting abstract art form for its beautifully unpredictable results. Using silicone oil as an additive to create stunning, colourful and bright cells in her creations, Marika experiments with different approaches including blowing, puddle pours, dirty cup pours, bottle-bottom pours, balloon kisses and the swipe method. Each piece is a unique symbol of creativity and hope for the future.
Marika is an exhibiting member with the Federation of Canadian Artists and the FCA Fraser Valley Chapter. She also holds membership with the Burnaby Artists Guild, Arts Council of Surrey, North Van Arts, Langley Arts Council, Bowen Island Arts Council, South Delta Artists Guild, and West Vancouver Community Arts Council. Marika has participated in several juried group shows and exhibits over the past four years. She finds freedom and joy through her art and strives to inspire others.
