Artist Statement

I work from my kitchen table in oil, watercolour and acrylic. In my creative process, I use a combination of plein air sketches, photographs and memories to build compositions. Some of my work is close to reality, while some is more a reflection of a feeling from a place or moment. I create texture by adding pastes and sometimes even earth to the paint, and I build shapes using brushes, palette knives and tools. At times I use mixed media to create contrasting effects.

My paintings explore the land, sea and sky of the Pacific Northwest. I depict mountains, reflections, distant shorelines and stormy skies. I use a limited colour palette, usually greys, blues, whites and blacks to reflect the desaturated mountain, forest and coastal landscapes of this region. I focus on natural forms and macro views.

My paintings are inspired by life on the edge of one of the least populated wilderness regions in the world.
