Biography

Jane Appleby is an expressive painter, inspired by the Canadian Landscape, often painting outdoors ‘en plein air’ and into abstraction.

Her latest oil and acrylic canvases that express the landscape in a playful and lyrical manner are showing in galleries in British Columbia and Alberta, and have also been exhibited as far away as Madrid, Spain.

Jane is an art educator instructing various workshops. She has a YouTube Channel on painting. She is the author of two books including her inspirational art: “Between Cottages” and “The Purposeful Brush”.

Her work is collected internationally and has won several awards, including an award of excellence from the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Artist Statement

My artistic journey started with my first solo show of paintings at Place des Arts titled Abstracting the Spirit which included paintings in acrylic into abstraction. I was pleased to take part in many more shows, including The Passionate Outdoor Painters Show when I published my first book “Between Cottages” which was available in the Artisan Shop. Another solo show titled Unwavering in 2013 in the Leonore Peyton Salon included over 20 paintings that explored a new impressionistic style which has led to my latest “Lyrical Expressions” of landscape using acrylics and oils.

The first art class I taught at PdA was for homeschooled children, where we had lots of fun exploring various painting methods. This led to workshops for adults in watercolour and acrylic, both indoors and outdoors as well as “Acrylics through the Window,” where we would look outside the window for inspiration. I also enjoyed many events, concerts and art shows at PdA that inspired me and my work.

All these opportunities and sharing my painting experiences through exhibiting and teaching were instrumental in my growth as an artist.

The collaboration of people working together to inspire the artist in all of us is what my painting Collaboration expresses.

Compelling Movements is an oil painting started on location at Galiano and completed looking through the window. In this painting, resilience and sensitivity of nature are celebrated through the movements of colour and dynamic brushwork.

I am thankful to all those that make Place des Arts a special place for connecting and expressing through the arts.
