Artist Statement

I am continually inspired by our serene and colourful natural environment and strive to capture a portion of this vast, magical world through my paintings. Working from photographs and using limited colour palettes, I painted this series of acrylic landscapes on wood boxes, which are both decorative and functional.

I first prepared the surfaces with three coats of gesso, sanding after each layer. To create a sense of depth, I included minimal details in the distant mountains but added lots of texture and three dimensional details in the foreground using modeling paste as well as heavy gel matte medium, coarse texture medium, and iridescent medium in separate paintings. Once completely dry, I applied varnish and polyurethane wood finish over the paintings and unfinished wooden areas respectively.

Through these hand-painted boxes, I’ve attempted to create a moment of bliss in our otherwise rushed and busy lives when one can be immersed in the beauty, calm and exuberance of nature. I believe painting is meditative for both the painter and the viewer, and I hope my paintings convey optimism, peace and tranquility.
