Artist Statement

Eliza’s work is about balance and fusion: the balance between form and surface design, and the fusion of Western culture and her Chinese heritage. Using nature as her inspiration, she likes to infuse its meaning into her pieces by celebrating the symbolism behind particular animals, plants and flowers. She is always drawing inspiration from those around her and constantly explores new ideas to challenge herself to expand her creativity.

Biography

Growing up in Hong Kong, Eliza Wang studied in education to become an art teacher. After she immigrated to Canada in the early 70s, Eliza continued her studies at the Vancouver School of Art, receiving a two-year certificate in graphic design and ceramics with honours. While spending 25 years working and raising a family, Eliza has always sought creative outlets as a hobby, including painting, decorative painting, stained-glass and graphic design. She started to focus her energy in ceramics after taking early retirement in 2002 and has established her own artistic style that draws inspiration from her life and culture.
