I’m a Grade 12 student studying at Terry Fox Secondary School. My key area of focus is illustration and the story behind it. Since I was a child, I often daydream of vivid visions of random illogical scenes that come with strong emotions. Sometimes those images are so strong and impactful that they haunt me with a burning and suffocating desire to make them real in the form of drawings.

For my Terry Fox illustration, I spent most of my time researching him and copying my findings onto paper, which I aged in appearance to resemble the original news articles. I had never drawn portraits before, so this was a new and challenging experience for me. Since completing this drawing, I’ve become more comfortable with portraits, and I created a self-portrait. Instead of using photos as a reference for my self-portrait, I painted directly from my memory because I wanted to see the difference between reality and my memories. I used a unique composition of me splitting in half. One half shows my face, and the other half shows what makes me. When people see me, I hope they not just notice my appearance, but more about what’s inside of me.
