The Apple of My Eye combines warm colours with soft shapes to wrap viewers in a comforting embrace. This piece is comfort food in the form of a painting, and it depicts an apple pie I created for my mother. The title symbolizes how this pie was a physical representation of my love for her. White highlights add visual interest, while the brown wooden rings ooze rustic charm and frame the plate. The soothing repetition of circular shapes creates visual harmony. I chose to recreate my pie using traditional art methods to emphasize how my creation was one of a kind, rather than a mass-produced grocery dessert. I hope that viewers explore how food is used as a form of communication through this painting.

Entremet Entrance was created by painting layers of acrylic over multiple days to build texture and opacity. This painting depicts my first attempt at baking a French entremet (layered cake) last summer. I have adored entremets since I was a child, and my cake is a grandiose treat that features a gooey brownie and luscious white chocolate mousse encased in a shiny mirror glaze. I experimented with applying paint to the tip of a pencil to dot highlights and speckle the mousse when creating the details, as I wanted a firmer surface than brushes offer. This creative application method reflects my experience in the kitchen, where I had to explore unconventional techniques to transform kitchen staples into a work of culinary art. One of these techniques was melting sugar pearls into golden flakes, which I emphasized in this piece by using a metallic paint. I invite viewers to appreciate how layering and patience can create beautiful results in both baking and painting.
