Modern Colour Series – “Modern Joy”
I wanted to create art pieces that were playful; inspired by the simple shapes and bright colours of mid-century modern design. I sewed a selection of monochromatic fabrics onto a felt backing to create the background, reminiscent of a tiny quilt. Colourful fabric in various shapes was appliqued (fused) to each background and machine-stitched using a “scribbly” approach. The stitching resembles marks that would be made if you were scribbling with a pen to outline the shapes. Mounted on canvas or wood blocks, they are ready to sit on a table or hang on a wall.
Biography
I am a mixed media artist. With an extensive background in quilt making, I have repurposed this design and construction knowledge as the foundation for my art. Textiles are my preferred medium. Utilizing techniques such as natural dyeing, painting, block printing, collage, machine and hand stitching and applique to enhance my work provides me with endless possibilities when creating my art.
Currently, my work references mid-century modernism, focusing on clean lines with a mix of both organic and geometric shapes in vivid colours. My studio is in Langley, British Columbia.
