Artist Statement
I wanted to create art pieces that were playful; inspired by the simple shapes and bright colours of mid-century modern design. I sewed a selection of monochromatic fabrics onto batting and topstitched various line shapes, reminiscent of a tiny quilt. Colourful felt circles embellished with brightly coloured embroidery thread and, in some cases, buttons from my collection were attached to the background pieces. Mounted on painted wood blocks, they are ready to sit on a table or hang on a wall.
Biography
I am a mixed media artist. With an extensive background in quilt making, I have repurposed this design and construction knowledge as the foundation for my art. Textiles are my preferred medium. I use techniques such as natural dyeing, painting, block printing, collage, machine and hand stitching as well as applique to enhance my work, which provide me with endless possibilities when creating my art.
Currently, my work references mid-century modernism, focusing on clean lines with a mix of both organic and geometric shapes in bright colours. My studio is in Langley, British Columbia.
