Artist Statement

I am interested in exploring places and objects that give me a feeling that is impossible to describe in words. Most of my subject matter is from my daily life. Finding small things to appreciate in the everyday serves as a starting point for creating my works, which reflect on the moment or object I feel grateful for. Painting is a matter of interpreting things you perceive and representing your feelings towards them. By excluding all colour and drawing with black ink, I can focus on the shape of the object or landscape itself. I hope to be able to convey these emotions through my art.

Biography

Langley based painter, Sojung Kim, was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. She began her artistic journey, traveling between New York and Seoul. She looks deeply into the moments that may pass by unintentionally. She is interested in creating a new world by recognizing and capturing such moments. The formative elements extracted from everyday things such as the alleyway in front of the house, the scenery outside the window or the shadows under our feet are reconstructed on her canvas. Kim is naturally drawing her condensed feelings through a simplified composition.
