Application Requirements

Place des Arts seeks local artists, based in Metro Vancouver, who create things small and unique for the 35th Positively Petite: Annual Miniature Exhibition. The exhibition will be hosted in the Atrium at Place des Arts from November 15 to December 19, 2024, with an opening reception on November 15, from 7:00-9:00 PM. The exhibition will also be featured online at placedesarts.ca/exhibitions from November 22 to December 19, 2024.

ARTWORKS MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

  • 2D Artwork
    • Image/artwork area must be 30 square inches or less
      (i.e. length x width = area; e.g. 5 inches x 6 inches = 30 square inches)
    • Frame area must be 144 square inches or less
      (i.e. length x width = area; e.g. 12 inches x 12 inches = 144 square inches)
  • 3D Artwork
    • Artwork volume must be 60 cubic inches or less
      (i.e. length x width x height = volume; e.g. 4 inches x 5 inches x 3 inches = 60 cubic inches)
  • All artworks must be original and made by the applicant; no craft kits, items purchased and assembled, imported crafts or items made by someone other than the applicant will be accepted;
  • Created within the past 12 months;
  • Never previously exhibited at Place des Arts;
  • A minimum of 3 artworks to a maximum of 8 artworks per artist;
  • Content/subject matter is appropriate for all audiences;
  • All artwork must be ready to hang and/or display, 2D artwork must have hanging hardware and/or a picture hanging wire securely attached;
  • All artwork is required to be for sale.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

  • All submissions will be reviewed and juried by Place des Arts based on the following criteria:
    • Quality of artwork
      • Does technical execution exhibit a solid understanding of the medium?
      • Is quality consistent across the entire submission?
    • Originality of artwork and the theme/concept
      • Does the artist use unique materials and/or techniques?
      • Does the artist explore a unique subject matter/theme or contribute something new to the topic?
    • Cohesiveness of submission
      • Do all submitted artworks reflect the artist's statement?
      • Is the concept/theme of the submission presented clearly?
  • All artists will be notified of the status of their application by mid-October; all decisions of the jury are final;
  • If accepted, Place des Arts will issue an exhibition contract and directions on artwork drop off, which will occur by appointment;
  • Place des Arts has the sole discretion to reject any artwork(s) at any time prior to or during the exhibition.

 

SALE OF ARTWORKS DURING THE EXHIBITION

  • Place des Arts will retain 30% of the retail price of any artwork(s) sold;
  • Artwork that sells may be replaced by the artist with no additional application fee.

  • Completed application form including:
    • Artist biography (maximum 250 words)
    • An artist statement outlining artistic approach (maximum 250 words)
    • 3-8 images of your completed work
  • $20.00 non-refundable application fee (including taxes) payable:

Note: If less than 8 artworks are submitted and the artist is accepted, the artist may exhibit a maximum of 8 artworks given the quality of the new artworks is consistent with the pieces originally accepted.
