Artist Statement

Corvids in general are fascinating birds. Crows, ravens and jays are all members of the Corvus family. In particular, I find the mystique of the raven compelling.

In North America, the raven is at the center of Indigenous myth and tradition, depicted as a trickster, a healer, a messenger and the creator of all life.

In the annals of western mythology and folklore, ravens often represent ancient wisdom and are seen as intermediaries between the material and spirit worlds. They are spectral messengers, bearing the weight of untold visions and prophetic whispers.

Ravens are social animals who mate for life. They can live for up to 20 years and are known to be bereft at the death of a mate…not so different from us humans. They love trinkets and shiny things, also not so different from us.

Biography

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing, painting and making art. I come from a family of artisans, stitching, weaving, woodworking and painting their way through life, one project at a time.

My work is primarily representational, but I love the alchemy that’s created when abstract imagery is combined with an element of realism. There is a visual abundance of light, colour and pattern in the natural world that is revealed when we look with intention. Living and working here on the west coast provides an endless source of inspiration.

I work in acrylic, mixed media, watercolour and encaustic. Birds, especially corvids, are my current fascination.

I hold a certificate in Fine Art from Emily Carr University of Art and Design
