Sofia Sanchez

Latin Dance

Sofia is an expressive arts therapist born in Caracas, Venezuela. From an early age, she trained in Latin American and Venezuelan traditional dance, as well as belly dance. While studying psychology with a focus on developmental and social psychology at Simon Fraser University, Sofia also worked as a production technician and assistant for various productions in SFU’s School for Contemporary Arts. During this time, she studied visual arts and trained in Theatre Production.

Sofia was awarded a Master of Arts after studying abroad in Switzerland, specializing in Expressive Arts Therapy. She has worked for over 10 years in Early Childhood arts programming, teaching visual arts and dance with Arts Umbrella, the City of Port Moody as well as independently. Sofia has also completed contracts with ThriveYouth and the City of Coquitlam as an Artist Educator, Cultural Ambassador and Dancer.

Sofia is passionate about celebrating diversity and empowering immigrant communities through the arts. She enjoys social dancing and sharing her story as an immigrant and mother through her paintings. When she is not teaching or dancing, she spends her days running her arts-based daycare centre, Mariposa Arts.
