Maggie Van Wyk
Born in South Africa, Maggie studied at the University of the Free-State in Bloemfontein. There she completed her Bachelor’s degree in Music, majoring in piano and music education. In addition, she completed an Honours Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (Cum Laude), an Advanced Certificate in Arts and Culture Education (Cum Laude) and three levels (Preparatory, Level 1 and Level 2) in Orff Schulwerk. In South Africa, Maggie had a teaching career spanning 20 years; she taught piano, music theory, music history, music appreciation, recorder, ukulele, folk guitar and Orff groups. She was also a director of church and school choirs, as well as an accompanist at churches and music festivals.
In September 2011, Maggie and her family immigrated to Canada. Since then she has been teaching piano, theory, history and harmony at the Bergthorson Academy of Musical Arts. Maggie has prepared many students of all levels for RCM examinations, competitions and festivals; her students are consistently successful, winning medals and awards.
Maggie is a registered member of the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association, and she is also the Music Director at the St. Laurence Anglican Church in Coquitlam, a position she has held since January 2015.
Maggie believes her purpose as a music teacher is to unlock and develop every student’s musical talent, enabling them to share the joy of music with others.
