Fading Ocean is a three-piece set created as a response to the visible suffering of the natural world caused by human actions. While making this work, I thought about the ocean as a living being, our mother nature, and how painful it is to witness her slow destruction. This series reflects the past, present, and potential future of marine life if human behavior remains unchanged.

The first piece, a mug decorated with ocean tones and sea creatures, represents life before human interference. It symbolizes a time when marine animals lived freely, ecosystems were balanced, and the water held its natural colors. The smooth blues and greens suggest peace, movement, and harmony.

The second piece, a whale bowl, represents the present. The whale’s facial features are shaped to express sadness and grief, mourning the loss of life already caused by pollution and climate change. The glaze is intentionally muddy and uneven, combining browns with traces of blue to show contamination and imbalance.

The final piece, a blue mug, represents the future. Life is absent, and the dry brown glaze around the rim suggests decay and drought. The handle is brown marking humans touch, emphasizing responsibility. Through functional, my practice confronts environmental consequence.
