Artist Statement
Reminiscing on our recent girls’ trip to New York City, we sought to create a series of artworks to explore the joyful moments we shared. The paintings were created separately yet collaboratively: we decided on the subject matter collectively, started a painting on our own, and then traded them to be completed by the other. Composed of both artists’ styles and techniques, each painting captures a small instance of happiness that we experienced, such as snacking in a Manhattan hotel, cracking jokes at the Met, and sharing a meal with our tíos on our last day together.
Biography
Krenaissance is an artist collective situated on unceded Coast Salish territory, including the lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, Tsawwassen and Kwantlen Indigenous peoples. The collective is composed of two first and second-generation immigrant-settler visual artists, Karen Leon (she/they) and Karen Tsui (she/they). The mediums in our practice include acrylic and digital painting, ceramics, illustration, printmaking and crafting. Centering friends and family in our work, we embrace and explore the intimate moments of humour, joy, love and silliness in everyday life.
