Artist Statement

Art is the only way to express my imagination and thoughts. Most of my inspiration comes from my daily life, what I see and the emotions I feel moment by moment. As a foreign exchange student, I am without my family here in Canada, so I often feel lonely. This is represented in many of my artworks, like Lonely Flower and Loneliness. Harmony in 광화문 is also about my loneliness, as it is a drawing of a car in front of the building that is my home in Korea—a symbol of my hometown.

When I think of media for drawing loneliness, the media that best expresses my inspiration is chalk. I think chalk is sometimes rough and sometimes soft, so it is a flexible medium that can represent a variety of emotions. When I need to use colour, I like to use acrylic paints or coloured pencils because I feel I have maximum control.

I have applied to three different colleges: Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles USA,  College for Creative Studies in Detroit and OCAD University in Toronto. I am looking to go into Industrial Design and Transportation Design so that I can design automotive vehicles.
