Artist Statement

A theme in my artwork is exhibiting my identity. During this creative process, I notice connections between my individuality, experiences and issues I’ve witnessed in society, which helps increase my knowledge and interest in social conflicts. To induce numerous questions, emotions and opinions from my viewers, I try to portray my artwork in a witty manner.

When looking at a piece of artwork where the message delivered is very clear, I tend to look and move on, whereas an indirect message gives rise to deep thoughts and questions. I believe that an artwork with wit that allows viewers to brainstorm and ponder is much more memorable than one that is simply aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

By voicing my outlook on issues that matter most that not all audience members are aware of, I believe my pieces are able communicate with viewers. This includes all viewers, whether they empathize, agree or disagree with my message, or even feel the urge to change their beliefs. Many of my pieces touch on negative topics, but I purposely use bright, saturated colours to create an interesting juxtaposition between the difficult subject matter and uplifting use of colour and light.

With my unique self in mind, I expand on challenging subjects by incorporating civil conflicts, emphasizing on displaying these important ideas in novel ways. I experiment with varied materials which helps me to discover and construct my skill and identity as an artist.
