<102%>- Acrylic on Paper 2025

<102%> is the first piece in my portfolio created with acrylic paint on 18×24 paper. As this work serves as my introduction, I wanted it to be direct and self-reflective. The title <102%> comes from the advice my father gave me as I prepare to become a legal adult and begin my own journey. He told me that once I am no longer under his or my mother’s protection, I will need “2% more” to stand on my own two feet. This idea always motivates me to push beyond what I believe is my limit, whenever I feel I have given my full effort. I chose to explore this idea through art, which always allows me to express my feelings freely.

The deep-sea background represents the overwhelming and intimidating impression of adulthood. The reflections of the buildings symbolize the city and my dad, my comfort zone. In contrast, the person falling into the sea and reaching out her hand represents myself, along with my determination to leave that comfort zone and begin my own journey. Through strong contrasts in color and form, I emphasize the separation between myself and the unknown reality I am about to face. I hope my piece can encourage viewers to push themselves just a little further and give that extra 2% when they feel they have already reached their 100%.
