Mixed Media on Wood Panel in the Mezzanine
Becoming explores the synthesis of nature, microorganisms and diverse forms as a metaphor for the Chinese immigrant experience. Examining the natural phenomena of growth, decay and rebirth, this exhibition reveals how the natural world reflects the self, and the self reflects the natural world.
These artworks depict the beauty of the natural world, from the delicate structures of microorganisms to the vast patterns of the environment. Eastern philosophies and the immigrant narrative inspired each painting, and together, they showcase the merging of Chinese heritage with the cellular narratives of nature.
“Becoming” symbolizes the beginning of life, like a seed sprouting in foreign soil. “Disintegration Effect” and “Resurrection” represent the life cycles of organisms, supporting the Taoist embracement of change and the Buddhist concept of impermanence. “Slanting” and “Symbiosis” reflect the mingling of distinct entities to form a harmonious whole, mirroring the adaptive strategies of immigrant life. “Tracing” invites viewers to consider the roots of existence, the intricate dance of DNA that connects us to our ancestors and the living world.
