Textile Art in the Mezzanine
This exhibition explores the diverse plant life in gardens, woods and overgrown lots. I enjoy growing herbs and flowers in our balcony garden and visiting local botanical gardens for inspiration. I often crouch down to examine the undergrowth. These textile pieces depict flowers, berries, seeds and mushrooms, drawing the viewer into the details. Textile art is the perfect medium for showcasing the details and texture of the natural world.
Techniques include quilting, embroidery and upcycling of textile waste. Most of the backgrounds are made with small pieces of fabric that are stitched together in a way that resembles a collage or mosaic. I use my sewing machine to make the backgrounds, then use hand embroidery and appliqué for the subject matter.
