Mixed media in the Mezzanine

All the Parts of Me is a collection of drawings, paint media and papers arranged into an exploratory series about the expressions of the self that go beyond the physical and make visible what is invisible. This exhibition explores the tension between control and loss of control and between the complicated aspects of the self that push, struggle and pull apart when faced with challenges. Through the cutting and ripping of layers and mediums, this work questions what “self” is and what it looks like to be seen in our complex wholeness, not just what is visible through the naked eye.

For many of these works, I started out with charcoal drawings of body parts, such as hands or faces to ground me to my experience of being in a body in the physical world. Arranging these drawings on paper, I began to experiment with lines and shapes that might express how I felt within my body, the emotional tensions I experienced when my body resisted the demands I placed on it and the struggle I felt to stay present. These pieces were built intuitively, layered with different mediums and techniques until each self-portrait felt complete, nuanced, dignified and honest.
