Artist Statement
I begin by selecting wood, which mostly comes from trees that have been cut down for various reasons by local arborists and would be destined for landfill. Some of my projects call for exotic wood, which I obtain from local suppliers. Then, I age the wood; seasoning it until it is stable or nicely spalted, which may take a few years depending on the wood. It then goes to the band saw for roughing into the basic shape for my project. After, it is mounted on the lathe where I shape it into the object I have in mind. It then goes to the finishing bench for whichever custom finishing is needed. Some of my projects have been inspired by other artists and some are my original ideas. I usually spend two to six hours a day turning wood or experimenting with different techniques for developing finishes. I use an assortment of commercially available finishes and some that I have developed myself. I sometimes incorporate various shapes of found glass and metal into some of my turned pieces.
Biography
I live in Vancouver and began working with wood at an early age. At 14, I was hand carving wooden picture frames for Hand Carved Frames Ltd., a custom picture frame manufacturing company. Several years later, my focus shifted to relief carving and carving designs on various types of custom furniture. I bought my first lathe and began wood turning in 2010. I have honed my skills by attending demos and workshops by internationally renowned wood artists, watching videos and studying numerous publications. I have been an active member of the Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild since 2010.
