Current Place des Arts fibre arts teacher

Biography

Catherine Dumaine graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in 1982 with an advanced certificate in fashion design and worked for over a decade in the local garment industry. She is now a fibre artist living and working in Port Coquitlam and has been teaching in art centres, schools and institutions around the Lower Mainland since 2007. Catherine is an active member of the Coquitlam Weavers Guild acting as their exhibit coordinator and continues to advance her skills through fibre arts workshops each year.

Artist Statement

For over 40 years, Catherine has been passionately interested in all textile arts. While her formal introduction to weaving was through Place des Arts in the 1990s, her connection to handmade cloth began much earlier, in high school, when she was introduced to Fibre Arts and the “wonder” of taking just an idea and working through the process to create many different unique textiles. One of the pieces for this show is a useful “Turkish towel” while the other is a whimsical button butterfly sewn on hand-woven cloth.
