Lantern-making with Catherine Dumaine

Catherine Dumaine is a fibre artist living in Port Coquitlam, BC. She has been teaching in art centres and institutions around the Lower Mainland and in local schools since 2007. Catherine’s work has been exhibited in shows locally including at Place des Arts, at the Port Moody Festival of the Arts and at Leigh Square Community Arts Village. As an artist in residence at Place des Arts in 2016, 2017 and 2018, she engaged thousands of school students to create lantern installations that were unveiled during their annual winter season event. Catherine continues to advance her skills through the multitude of fibre arts workshops she takes each year.

Join us this holiday season to help create the feeling of joy and laughter at Place des Arts by decorating a tiny “Ryan” house lantern that will be added to Place des Arts playful and seasonal Holiday trees. Then create your own beautiful lantern by using the whimsical technique of salad spinner splatter painting.

Dance and Movement with Axé Capoeira

As one of the most popular and widely reputable martial arts academies in Vancouver, Axé Capoeira has introduced this interdisciplinary art form to thousands of children, youth, and adults since taking root in the city in 1990. Having seen firsthand the effects of learning capoeira on the students, they believe capoeira is an asset in everyday life. Axé continues to travel around the world, participate in competitions and promote the history, music, art, and culture of Brazil in interactive and educational demonstrations.

Workshop Description
Capoeira is an interdisciplinary martial art that combines aspects self-defense, dance, acrobatics and music. As an Afro-Brazilian art form, capoeira will teach students an appreciation for multiculturalism through music played on traditional Afro-Brazilian instruments, songs sung in Portuguese and aspects of Brazilian dance. Students will participate in intensive physical activity through training capoeira self-defense movements and supplementary physical conditioning. With its emphasis on active health, the arts, social inclusion, and cultural appreciation we believe that capoeira fills a much-needed niche in the education of today’s students.
