Endless Woods

A 10 x 9-inch surface, illustrated with oil-based black pen and watercolour paint. The initial thought process for this piece was to recreate the camera movement “dolly zoom,” as a physical piece.

To create an illusion such that the background extends or distorts, I decided to fold watercolour paper into layers, appearing similar to an accordion. Instead of having a repetitive series of trees when unfolded, I illustrated an eye; which is the “eye” of the forest, at the very far end of the layers. Since the trees were colourless, I figured I could add more vibrance to the piece if the leaves of the “opening layers” were coloured with watercolour paint. Unique shades were painted onto the leaves, each layer dyed with different colours.

Transparent Veils

An acrylic painting on a 24 x 18-inch canvas. The initial idea of creating this painting was to practice illustrating the folds of fabric. The time I had visited a church, I noticed all of the artworks such as paintings and sculptures decorating the interior had sophisticated portrayals of fabric. Such experience was the motivation to shift to painting a religion-related piece while having it also contain the detailed depiction of fabric.

A group of veiled impure, dark beings are shown to be praising “the light,” which indicates God. Their arrogant mindsets think that by veiling themselves, their heinous sins are concealed as well. They only want to play the act of being pure spirits without confessing their sins, but only to cover them up as if they never existed. However, the veils are nothing but transparent in God’s eyes. The veils exactly reflect how lightweight and insignificant their beliefs are.
