Artist Statement

Little Somas (named after the cell body of a neuron, the Latin translation of soma is body) is a ritual documentation of my daily stretching practice for chronic pain. Whichever position felt best in my body, I would take a small amount of clay and create a tiny version of it that same day. This practice has helped redirect and retrain my thoughts from pain catastrophizing and connect with my body. They are my consistent and hopeful reminders of embodied releases of pain. This series was done every day for one week, moving up the 7 chakras.

I have created art for as long as I can remember, growing up in Lions Bay and now residing in Vancouver, BC. I have my BFA in Visual Art and Art History from the University of British Columbia, for one year of which I studied at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney, Australia. After graduating, I became a dedicated yogi, completing my yoga teacher training in Rishikesh, India. I am interested in ritual, the body, symbols of light and dark as metaphors for life and death and art as a modality for healing and connection.
