Artist Statement

At the start of the school year in 2020, I signed up for my first ever visual arts class. Although I had long thought about doing art, I had never committed to it in any way. I have an interest in film and that still remains my passion. After my film class got cancelled because of COVID, I decided to take a leap and sign up for visual arts. Upon starting the class, I quickly learned two things: one, that I was very far behind in terms of technical skill, and two, I had zero idea as to what I wanted to express. At the start, most of my work was about myself, I focused heavily on personal struggles since it seemed straightforward to express. Eventually, I began to confront the idea of institutionalism, which is what most of my current work expresses. As someone who strongly opposes conformity and the idea of an institutionalized society, I look to use my art as a visual expression of ideas that cannot be explained in words.
