Artist Statement
Looking closely at nature allows us to appreciate its wonder. These mini-quilts were inspired by macro photos I took of the delicate structures created by decaying sand dollar. I hand-dyed the intense colours on silk fabric.
Biography
For many years, Margaret’s creative outlet was photography, especially taking macro nature pictures that focused on colours in the morning light. She finds compositions in nature very inspiring, and she now transforms her close-up photos into art quilts. Margaret prefers to work with silk, creating unique silk fabrics using a variety of techniques such as over-dyeing, resists with procion dyes, natural dyes and eco-dyeing. Her quilts are designed with these fabrics using fused applique, layering and stitching to add texture and dimension.
