Various Mediums in the Mezzanine

This exhibition, curated by First Nations artist Christine Mackenzie, intends to uplift Indigenous artists of various backgrounds and celebrate different styles of Indigenous art by challenging its definition.

Northwest Coast formline design is an artistic style used by some Urban Indigenous artists and is characterized by linework of varied thickness that flows throughout the artwork to compose the image or design. However, Indigenous art is not limited to this style, which can be incorrectly associated with defining all Indigenous art. There is no singular definition that encompasses Indigenous art, only that the people making the art are Indigenous.

The pieces on display were created by emerging and established Urban Indigenous artists, working in a variety of mediums including photography, fibre art, storytelling, painting and upcycling using traditional and contemporary approaches to art making. The mixture of mediums in this exhibition captures a variety of sensory experiences, ones that are perceived, interpreted and presented through an Indigenous lens.
