Artist Statement

I strive to reflect the social impact of current events within my pieces. Shifting protocols, unpredictable schedules and so many unknown variables can create a feeling of being lost and hopeless during a global pandemic. Through acrylic paint, marker, newspaper and magazine clippings, I create busy images to convey this overwhelming feeling.

The old adage goes “there is always calm within the storm”, but life during a global pandemic can often feel so relentless that the calm does not exist. In my work, I use brush strokes to convey unpredictability of direction, I use contrasting colours to represent the duplicity of the seen and unseen sides of chaos and I use texture to represent the variety of experiences.

In all my work, I use opposing elements such as light versus dark and vibrant versus pale colours to create a sense of danger while simultaneously being strangely inviting. This causes a general sense of discomfort while still making one question the bigger picture. My pieces are not meant to be pretty; they are meant to make people feel something. I create works of art that make people wonder and question the world we live in, to bring awareness to the impact of world events today.
